Icons of England

ICONS was an on-line project launched by the office of the Secretary of State for Culture, Media, and Sport with its aim to find out about a shared English culture and whether it exists at all. Objects, places, people, ideas, fictional characters, etc. are nominated by readers and put to a vote and debated before the advisory board decides whether the nominated item should become an Icon of England.

The site has some nice features ('Free lesson plans!') and tons of information on the icons, all with the aim to 'create the portrait of England'.
